A guide to playing mobile games offline

Not every moment comes with a good connection. This guide explains which mobile games tend to work offline and how to prepare before you lose signal.

Why offline play still matters

Many popular mobile games in 2026 rely on an internet connection for events, multiplayer and cloud saves. That is fine at home, but less helpful on a flight, in the countryside or anywhere with weak signal.

Offline-friendly games also tend to use less mobile data and fewer background resources. For some players, offline play is simply calmer: no chat, no live events and no pressure to log in at a certain time.

Genres that work well offline

Puzzle games are the most common offline option. Many let you play levels without a connection, although some features such as leaderboards or daily rewards may wait until you reconnect.

Single-player role-playing games and adventure games often support offline play, especially those sold as a single purchase. Platformers, card-based strategy games against the computer and some simulation games also tend to work without a connection.

Team arenas, shooters and live strategy games usually need to be online because they match you with other players in real time.

How to check whether a game runs offline

The simplest test is direct. Before your trip, turn on airplane mode and open the game. If it loads and lets you play, you have your answer. If it shows a connection error, it needs to be online.

You can also check the store description. Some developers mention offline support directly. Player reviews sometimes discuss it too, but test it yourself because behaviour can change with updates.

Remember that some games work offline only after the first launch, when they download extra content. Open each game at least once while connected.

Saving progress safely

Offline progress is usually stored on your device. If you uninstall the game or switch phones before syncing, that progress may be lost.

To stay safe, link the game to an account if it offers that option, and reconnect after playing offline so the game can sync. Some games warn you if local and cloud saves differ. Read those messages carefully before choosing which save to keep, because picking the wrong one can overwrite recent progress.

Preparing for a trip

A little planning makes offline gaming much smoother.

  1. 01

    Update games beforehand

Install updates on Wi-Fi so a required patch does not block you later.

  2. 02

    Test in airplane mode

Open each game offline to confirm it actually runs.

  3. 03

    Charge and pack power

Fully charge your device and bring a charger or power bank if you can.

  4. 04

    Sync when you return

Reconnect afterwards so your offline progress is backed up.
